Relay Summer Experience is an intensive, six-week summer teaching fellowship program for college students. Earn a scholarship and gain valuable experience teaching summer school to elementary and middle school students in cities around the country.

Program content

In this summer teaching fellowship, you’ll spend four weeks teaching summer school after receiving two weeks of extensive professional development. You’ll learn how to build a positive classroom culture, plan and deliver rigorous lessons, and make school fun and rewarding for your students. The program site is located in New Orleans.


For 2018 Relay Summer Experience, you must be graduating after spring 2018 with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher. For applicants who are freshman and sophomores during school year 2017-18, those with a 2.5 or higher will be considered. 


Program participants will receive a scholarship.


Teaching degrees or certifications are not offered as part of the Relay Summer Experience program. However, we guarantee that your experience will be unique, hands-on, and hard to recreate in any college classroom.

+ When does Relay Summer Experience start? How long is the program?

Relay Summer Experience is an intensive, six-week summer teaching fellowship program. Exact start and end dates may vary by region, but, in general, the program will begin in late May and run through early July.

+ Where will the program take place?

In 2017, Relay Summer Experience will take place in New Orleans. In future years, we anticipate offering the program in additional cities. Information about specific site locations is provided to applicants as it becomes available.

+ Where do I live during the program?

Relay will make arrangements for Fellows to take advantage of affordable, nearby campus housing during the program. Fellows may also have the option to secure local housing on their own.

+ What experience do I need to apply?

Relay is looking for applicants who have demonstrated leadership and initiative in their current or past activities. Prior experience working with students or children is an asset but is not required. Summer Fellow applicants should be passionate about serving students in urban, high-need schools and communities, and should have an interest in exploring teaching as a potential career path.

A paid, multi-year teaching program that college students can start as early as their junior year, while enrolled in a full-time degree program. Program completion results in a teaching certificate and a master’s degree in teaching.
